Soup for winter days

Published on What is it about the cooler days that make you want to feed your face every 20 minutes? I’m no expert but my guess would be that it has a lot to do with delicious aromas, the ever-cooling temperatures, the warmth of the kitchen, and the endless supply of delectable bits that awaken your tastebuds! What do you think? Is that what winter is about? It sure is!

In South Africa, nothing says winter quite like a big pot of soup, cooking away on a gas burner (or any other stove-top!). You’d come home from school and your mother would be busy in the kitchen – chopping onions, carrots, potatoes and other vegetables to little pieces, ready to go into a big pot. You’d patiently wait until it was all done, and afterwards give your mom a big hug as thanks for the delicious bowl of steaming hot soup.
The great thing about soup is that it can be made from practically anything. I kid you not! A few vegetables are all you need for a basic recipe and, if you’re feeling fancy, you can add any of your other loved ingredients and you’re good to go.
All wonderful flavours aside, soup is also rather nutritious. It’s often difficult to get your daily amount of fruit and vegetables in your diet without having to steam-up the same ol’ broccoli or chop up that uninspiring apple every day. Luckily, Moms have all your nutritional needs sorted with soup, as all the vegetables and goodness can be found in one pot.
