How Management Can Assist In The Office Environment

Published on The environment of the office plays a big role in the motivation and productivity of employees. Employees should be relaxed enough to do their work efficiently and comfortable enough to ask for help from colleagues or management. An ideal environment should include lots of fresh air for good health to make employees feel at ease. There should be plenty of open windows and if possible, plants to aid the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels of the area. Artificial air devices such as air conditioners should be optional.

While it is not always possible to ensure that every person has a large enough space in which to work, the open planned office would then be ideal as it allows for colleague interaction, all while still providing each employee to his/her own space to put up a few pictures or decorate as they feel fit.

Management should make sure to provide everything that is needed to produce optimal results from the employees. Things such as simple office stationery should never be an issue as the lack of this would just slow the work process down. It may also cause friction between staff members as sharing and misplacement of these simple things can often lead to frustrations when time is used by having to search for them.

For example, in an office of ten people, only one kit of stationery is available for use. On assignment, one of the employees has used the stapler and has returned it to its place without refilling the staples. Result: the next person to use it spends unnecessary time looking for the refill, all the while feeling irritation at the one who had used it before. Thus, the office environment is now slightly hostile and of course, valuable work time has been lost. Petty as it may seem, good management will foresee this and try to ensure that these situations are kept to a minimum.

It is this kind of practice from management that will ensure that the office environment has a good flow to it and that productivity is then at its peak. Happy employees most often result in good work ethic and a job well done.
